Benedict Sheehan: Ukrainian War Requiem Wins 2026 JUNO Award
News | 2026-07-16 06:21:35
Cappella Records, the record label of Cappella Romana, is thrilled to announce its first release to earn a JUNO Award!

The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences has awarded the JUNO award for Classical Album of the Year (Large Ensemble) to Cappella Records’ 2025 release of Benedict Sheehan: Ukrainian War Requiem, featuring the Axios Men's Ensemble and the tenors and basses of Pro Coro Canada, under the direction of Michael Zaugg.
Benedict Sheehan’s Ukrainian War Requiem is a powerful tribute to Ukraine’s enduring spirit, honoring lives lost in war through music. Rooted in the tradition of the panakhyda (a memorial service for the dead), it blends ancient Ukrainian prayers, Latin texts, and Jewish melodies, symbolizing Ukraine’s complex past, present, and future.
Performed by the Axios Men’s Ensemble and the tenors and basses of Pro Coro Canada under Michael Zaugg, this work commemorates the ultimate sacrifice for freedom, democracy, and faith. The Ukrainian War Requiem stands as a vigil for the fallen and a celebration of Ukraine’s resilient heritage.
All of us at Cappella Records send hearty congratulations to conductor and composer Benedict Sheehan, the production team at Soundmirror (Blanton Alspaugh, producer), and all the singers who made this album!

#2 Billboard Chart Debut for Frank La Rocca: Requiem for the Forgotten; Messe des Malades
News | 2024-03-27 15:11:01
Congratulataions to the Benedict XVI Choir and Orchestra and director Richard Sparks! Their recording, Frank La Rocca: Requiem for the Forgotten; Messe des Malades debuted this week (Week of March 30, 2024) at #2 on the Billboard Traditional Classical Charts!

Requiem for the Forgotten commemorates the displaced and the homeless, constructing a musical sanctuary for the soul while championing the inherent dignity of every person, particularly those who have been forsaken. Drawing upon his Ukrainian heritage, La Rocca’s setting of a poem on Ukrainian priest Andrei Ischak (martyred by the Bolsheviks) deeply resonates with those enduring oppression today. The composer’s late sister Carin, who valiantly confronted the challenges of multiple sclerosis, gave inspiration to the Messe des Malades (Mass for the Sick). It underscores the universal need for healing, capturing the composer’s personal journey as well in every note. Infused with an ethical power towards empathy, this music moves us to use our own gifts in a more excellent way for a broken world.
Benedict XVI Choir’s début recording of these works is sung by some of America’s finest singers, many GRAMMY®-nominated. Sung in Latin and English. Booklet includes all translations.

Cappella Records is excited to share the #7 Debut of our Arvo Part: Odes of Repentance album on the Traditional Classical Billboard® Charts! Congratulations to Cappella Romana and Alexander Lingas!
12 spellbinding tracks which give voice to the human yearning to be cleansed… the stars, the galaxies, all the wonders of a distant universe seem to touch us through the medium of sound.… this is an album of supreme artistry to cherish, heed, and enjoy. ”
–Linda Holt, ConcertoNet
“a moving litany of rarified and heightened choral expression… perfection in…each of these beautiful works”
—Grego Applegate-Edwards, Classical-Modern Music Review
“distinct from others of Pärt’s music”
–David Salazar, Opera Wire
“saying that the Cappella Romana presentation of Pärt’s Odes of Repentance seems an ideal merger of composer and performers borders on cliché – which does not make the assertion any less true”
–Mark Estren, InfoDad
